IEC 60529 has been developed to rate and grade the resistance of enclosures of electric and electronic devices against the intrusion of dust and liquids. The first numeral refers to protection against solid objects rated from 0 (no protection) to 6 (no ingress of dust).
It is tested by exposing an item to an oscillating spray for a minimum of 10 minutes. An item passes when there is limited ingress with no harmful effects.
To get an IP rating for your product, you must arrange to test it through an independent, certified company.
IP65 enclosures protect against water jets projected by a nozzle (6.3 mm) from any direction with no harmful effects.
IPX6 can resist high-pressure, heavy sprays of water but is not designed for submersion testing.
IP68 enclosures provide superior protection and are recommended for applications requiring maximum outdoor device protection.
The Ingress Protection standard most commonly tested to is BS EN/IEC 60529.
Manufacturers use various electronics testing instruments for waterproof testing, including pressure decay, vacuum leak, and tracer gas leak methods.
IP55 provides complete protection against harmful deposits of dust and contact with live or moving parts inside the enclosure.
IP65, IP66 and IP67 ratings are widely accepted as 'waterproof' for most general purposes.
NEMA 4X is equivalent to IP66, providing total protection against dust.
