Abrasion Resistance Test Procedure
7.14.1 Specimen Preparation:
  • Cut six straight untwisted specimens (15 inch/380 mm) from finished cable
  • Lay specimens flat and parallel on a horizontal steel plate
  • Secure each specimen at both ends
  • Position abrasion tool (weighted steel cylinder with three parallel teeth) above each specimen center
  • Align tool teeth perpendicular to specimen axis
7.14.2 Test Execution:
  • Reciprocate specimen plate horizontally at 30 cycles/minute
  • Use simple harmonic motion parallel to specimen axes
  • Center stroke on abrasion tools (6 inch/150 mm length)
7.14.3 Test Monitoring:
  • Begin test with plate at stroke end and counter at zero
  • Apply weight to each tool (3 lbf ±0.5 ozf / 13.34 ±0.14 N)
  • Lower tools gently onto specimens and begin reciprocation
  • Continue until jacket penetration or 70 complete cycles
  • Operator must monitor wear, clear debris, and record penetration cycles
Note: Test complies with UL 719 standard for evaluating jacket abrasion resistance on flat cables.
